As a Chinese medicinal material, calcined oyster shell is widely used in the field of Chinese materia medica. It has the effects of astringing and securing (stopping abnormal discharges), relieving acid regurgitation and pain, calming the mind with its heavy nature, and softening hard lumps and dissipating nodules. Additionally, calcined oyster shell can subdue hyperactive yang and replenish yin. It is often used to treat conditions such as "water failing to nourish wood" (a TCM term referring to kidney yin deficiency failing to nourish liver wood), yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity, dizziness and tinnitus.
