In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Shuixi Oyster Shell (water-washed oyster shell) generally refers to raw oyster shell. It is obtained by harvesting the shells of oyster family animals, removing the meat, washing the shells thoroughly, and then drying them in the sun. Its application in TCM and differences from Duanshao Oyster Shell (calcined oyster shell) are as follows:

Water-Washed Oyster Shell
It has the effects of calming the mind by 重镇 (zhenzhong, a TCM term meaning "heavy-substance soothing"), suppressing yang and nourishing yin, and softening hardness to dissipate nodules.
It is commonly used to treat conditions such as palpitations and insomnia, dizziness and tinnitus, scrofula and phlegm nodules, and abdominal masses.

- Example 1: For dizziness caused by yin deficiency and yang hyperactivity, it is often combined with dragon bone (longgu), tortoise shell (guijia), and white peony root (baishao).
- Example 2: For scrofula caused by phlegm-fire stagnation, it is mostly paired with figwort root (xuanshen) and fritillary bulb (beimu) to resolve phlegm and dissipate nodules.
Calcined Oyster Shell
Its main effects are astringing and securing (guse, a TCM term for stopping abnormal discharges) and relieving acid regurgitation and pain.
It is commonly used to treat conditions such as spontaneous sweating and night sweats, spermatorrhea and involuntary ejaculation, uterine bleeding and leukorrhea, and stomach pain with acid regurgitation.
