• Medicinal Name and Source: When used as a TCM ingredient, the pearl oyster shell is called "Zhenzhumu" (Pearl Mother). It is the shell of pearl oyster family animals such as Pinctada martensii. It can be collected throughout the year; after removing the flesh, cleaning, and drying, it becomes usable as a medicinal material.
• Efficacy and Indications: It has the effects of calming the liver and suppressing yang, tranquilizing the mind and relieving convulsions, and improving eyesight to reduce nebula. It can be used to treat conditions such as headache and dizziness, palpitations and insomnia, mania and convulsions, and liver heat-induced red eyes. For example, it treats dizziness, headache, blurred vision and tinnitus caused by excessive liver yang; and it also treats palpitations and insomnia.
• Pharmacological Effects: Pearl Mother contains components such as calcium carbonate, various amino acids, and inorganic elements. It has effects like lowering blood pressure, sedation, anti-oxidation, and preventing osteoporosis. Additionally, the nacre powder (from the shell) has effects such as reducing gastric acid secretion and promoting ulcer healing.

• Handicraft Field: Pearl oyster shells have a nacre layer with good luster and texture, making them suitable for making shell carvings and handicrafts. For instance, they can be processed into ornaments and decorations of various shapes, which possess high ornamental and artistic value.
• Cosmetics Field: The pearlescent layer (inner layer of the pearl oyster shell) is rich in various amino acids and trace elements. It has effects such as controlling oil, eliminating acne, and fading acne marks, so it can be used in the production of cosmetic and skincare products.
