In the Field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

In TCM, the shell of Scapharca subcrenata is known as Walengzi (the TCM name for ark shell). It has a salty taste and a neutral nature, and is associated with the Lung, Stomach, and Liver Meridians in TCM theory.

Its TCM effects include:

  • Resolving phlegm and dissipating blood stasis
  • Softening hard lumps and dispelling nodules
  • Reducing acid secretion and relieving pain

It is indicated for the following conditions in TCM: stubborn phlegm that is sticky and difficult to expectorate, goiters, scrofula (lymph node tuberculosis), abdominal masses, stomach pain, and acid regurgitation.

Clinically, it is used in two forms when prepared as medicine:

  1. Raw form: Preferred for resolving phlegm, dissipating blood stasis, softening hard lumps, and dispelling nodules.
  2. Calcined form: Preferred for reducing acid secretion and relieving pain.

In the Field of Tableware

The shell of Scapharca subcrenata can be used as a tableware tool. In catering, chefs sometimes use the empty shell as a decorative item or a food container, functioning like a small bowl. It is often topped with minced garlic, chopped green onions, etc., allowing diners to conveniently pick up the shell and eat the Scapharca subcrenata meat directly from it.
